rams fight for james!

I Fight For James is a family fund campaign that has been set up by James' mum, Elizabeth Keenan.

James was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at the age of 7 in 2013, just a few days before his twin brothers were born. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a severe progressive muscle-wasting condition, which is life-limiting and currently incurable. It disproportionately affects boys at approx. 1 in every 3,500 in comparison with girls at approx. 1 in every 5 million.

James' twin brothers were also later diagnosed with the condition.

Under the banner of their I Fight for James campaign, the Keenans have worked tirelessly to raise money for research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and with the support of their family and friends have raised over £91,000 for Muscular Dystrophy UK. In 2018, they were recognised with the President's Award for Fundraiser of the Year, which was presented to them by Gabby Logan.

And whilst they continue to raise funds and awareness for MDUK, with James' condition progressing to a stage where he is now increasingly dependent upon a wheelchair, the family needs to focus primarily on both the current and future needs of their own boys. As such, they are now raising money to be able to give James and his brothers a better quality of life through a wheelchair adapted vehicle (WAV), so that they can continue to enjoy outings as a family.

Leigh Ramblers has teamed up with local businessman, Andy Hurrell, Managing Director of Corin Underwriting to help raise funds for the family through the
I Fight for James campaign. This is, we hope, the beginning of a long and successful partnership with Andy, who has sponsored a new set of tracksuits for the First Team, which will all bear an I Fight for James logo on the sleeve. In return, we will be undertaking a series of fundraising activities throughout the course of the season.

This new partnership is a great opportunity for the Club and working alongside such an amazing charity fits beautifully with the Club’s family feel and ethics. We are all very much looking forward to making some great money for the charity and helping us continue to strive to improve as a Club.

Like many, the last 18 months have seen many changes, most noticeably relocating the business from London to my hometown of Leigh-on-Sea. Wanting to support a local team, we felt Leigh Ramblers held many of the similar ethics as Corin so saw it as an easy fit. Together we are supporting I Fight for James family fund which is such a worthy cause. I look forward to supporting the club on the exciting journey that lays ahead.
