A Team Management – The Interview

A Team Management – The Interview

Richard Ackery23 May - 18:30

EOFL Division Five Title Winners Give Us a Glimpse Behind The Scenes

Following the Rams’ dramatic title-winning season, sealed with a 3–2 victory over Rochford Town Reserves, we spoke to A Team Managers Jake Fairman and Lewis Davidson, in addition to George Hanlon (who alongside George Perkins is one of the players who has stepped into a leadership role within the team) to reflect on the journey, the pressure of the final day, and what comes next.

Reflecting on the title win — how does it feel now it’s done?
Jake:
“It’s a really special feeling. Rochford pushed us all the way and there were definitely moments of doubt during the season, but to come through it and beat one of the best sides over the full campaign makes it even more satisfying.”
Lewis:
“It was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster getting there. We put ourselves in a strong position but had a few results where we thought it might slip away. To get to the final day and then win it was an incredible feeling.”
George:
“It’s been a journey full of highs and lows. Winning the league makes all of that worth it, and it reflects the hard work everyone has put in over the past couple of years.”

What was the atmosphere like going into that must-win final game?
Lewis:
“If I’m honest, it was a bit nervy. I must have checked everything 100 times. But we spoke a lot about staying positive and sticking together.”
Jake:
“The dressing room itself was actually quite relaxed. The experienced lads really led that and the message was simple — enjoy the moment.”
George:
“There was definitely pressure, but the squad had a strong belief. We put a lot of preparation into it and the lads delivered.”

Was there a key moment when you felt the team could win the title?
Lewis:
“Probably early on, winning 11 of the first 12. That gave us belief. But also the first game against Rochford when we came back to draw 2–2 just a few weeks ago — that showed the lads wouldn’t give up.”
Jake:
“There were a couple of moments where we had to dig in — games where we came back or refused to be beaten. That tells you a lot about a group.”
George:
“The run-in was huge, especially the win in the Cockleshed Derby against Leigh Town to secure promotion. That really lifted the pressure and let us focus on the title.”

Looking back, how did you rebuild the A Team?
Lewis:
“When I first stepped in, it needed a rebuild. We wanted to create a core group of lads who enjoyed playing together and felt it was their team.”
Jake:
“At the start it wasn’t about results. It was about building something people wanted to be part of — and once that was there, the results followed.”
George:
“We focused on enjoyment, commitment and connection to the club. Those foundations are still what drives the team now.”

How important has the culture and togetherness been?
Jake:
“Huge. We’ve always been big on playing for each other and creating a positive environment.”
Lewis:
“The change in attitude and commitment has been massive. The lads turn up every week, and that says everything.”
George:
“The togetherness is the biggest factor. The relationships within the squad made everything easier.”

Which players have stood out or developed the most?
Jake:
“Two players stand out. Max Reeder and Dexter Payne. Max joined us as a teenager last season and, I’m sure he won’t mind me saying, he was quite shy at first. Seeing his development both as a footballer and as a person was brilliant, and it was great to see him recognised with an honourable mention for Most Improved Player at the club last season. Dexter Payne is a big one. He came in as a young lad and has developed massively into a key player.”
Lewis:
“Dex has been phenomenal in his first season. But a lot of the lads have grown — experienced players stepping up, and younger lads like Ray making a big impact.”
George:
“Dex is definitely one, and Ray Burkmar as well in terms of development. Dom North has also grown into a real leader this season.”

How important were last season’s cup runs to this year’s success?
Lewis:
“They gave us belief. We beat some very good sides and realised we could compete at a higher level.”
Jake:
“It showed us the standard we needed, but also that we were capable of reaching it.”
George:
“That belief carried into this season. It changed the mentality of the squad.”

And what about this year’s county cup semi-final defeat?
Jake:
“Losing a semi-final is always tough to take, especially after beating Chingford Harriers, who I honestly felt were the strongest side we’d face before the final. That result made us believe we could go all the way. Against Eversley Athletic in the semi-final, I thought we were the better side and, on another day, a few things go differently and we’re playing for silverware. ”
Lewis:
“But it probably helped refocus us on the league and what we really wanted to achieve.”
George:
“It sharpened us. It reminded us we needed to be at our best to reach our goals.”

Last year you, Jake and Lewis, were jointly named Rambler of the Year, the first time the award was given to a duo — what did that mean?
Jake:
“I think the initial feeling was surprise — in the best possible way. I honestly didn’t think we’d even be in contention for the award, let alone win it. Recognition like that is so important within clubs because it gives you a real sense of appreciation and pride in what you’re doing. It was a huge privilege to receive the award ahead of so many other deserving people at a club of this size”
Lewis:
“It was such a brilliant moment to be named the winner alongside Jake as the co-managers for the A Team. I think it was right as we both felt the award belonged to more than just one person and more than just the two of us as well. I felt it was a recognition of the hard work and dedication of each member of the A team. The management team, including George Hanlon and George Perkins, and all the players, who had built the team and made it successful.”

Why is this the right time to step down?
Jake:
“There were a few reasons behind it. Personally, I found the commitment difficult to balance at times this season, and I had to rely heavily on Lew and the Georges for support and assistance. I can’t thank them enough for everything they did, along with the wider club, but I also felt it wasn’t always fair on them.
Secondly, I think it’s the right time to leave on a high and allow the A Team to move in a new direction with a different voice.”
Lewis:
“I’ve enjoyed being player/manager for three years but I feel it’s time to focus on seeing out my playing career, since I’m 42 in the summer, and let someone new come in that can be fully focused on preparing the A team to compete at a higher level”
George:
“For me it’s about focusing more on playing and starting my coaching journey.”

What will you miss the most?
Jake:
“The dressing room and the atmosphere — this group has been brilliant to be around.”
Lewis:
“Honestly, everything. It’s been the most enjoyable time I’ve had in football.”
George:
“The enjoyment and the bond between the lads. That’s what stands out.”

What do you hope your legacy will be?
Jake:
“A strong, sustainable A Team that the club can build on.”
Lewis:
“A winning mentality, but also togetherness and positivity.”
George:
“That players look back on it as some of the most enjoyable football they’ve been part of.”

Finally — what’s next, and where can this squad go?
Lewis:
“I think the team can definitely compete at the next level. There’s a great base there.”
Jake:
“There’s real potential, especially with younger players coming through.”
George:
“The group can go in whatever direction it wants — but it will be done together, as one club.”

Club Secretary’s Tribute
As Club Secretary, I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to Jake, Lewis and "the Georges" for everything they have given to the A Team over the past few seasons. What they have achieved goes far beyond results on the pitch — they have rebuilt a team and created a culture of togetherness. To finish this journey as league champions is a fitting way to sign off. On behalf of everyone at Leigh Ramblers, thank you for your commitment, your energy, and the memories you have helped create.
