Manager’s Thoughts Ahead of EOFL Senior League Cup Final

They never give up
- Terry Johnson

With the final fast approaching, we also caught up with First Team Manager Terry Johnson to get an insight into the Rams’ journey, preparation, and mindset heading into the EOFL Senior League Cup Final.
From resilience in the cup run to managing the big occasion, here’s what he had to say.

Resilience shown on the road to the final

For Johnson, one match in particular highlights the character of his side.

“The game away at Corinthians really summed this team up.”

“We went behind twice despite being the better side, but the lads kept their heads down, worked harder, and stayed calm. In the end, we got the goals we deserved.”

“They never give up, and that was clear for everyone to see in that match.”

Staying grounded for the big occasion

Managing the balance between excitement and focus is key in the build-up to a final — and Johnson keeps things simple.

“I focus on the positives from previous games.”

“It’s about reminding the players of what they’ve done well, reinforcing good performances, and focusing on our strengths rather than worrying too much about the opposition or the occasion.”

Tough decisions off the pitch

With players returning from injury and competition for places high, selecting a final squad is never easy.

“It was tough, especially with a couple of lads coming back from injury.”

“I explained my decisions honestly. The team has to come first, but you also have to recognise the lads who have been there week in, week out all season.”

Preparation with penalties in mind

While much of the preparation remains consistent with league matches, cup football brings its own unique considerations.

“The main difference is preparing for penalties.”

“You hope it doesn’t come to that, but we’ve already been to shootouts in three out of the four rounds so far, including both the quarter-finals and semi-finals, so it’s something we have to be ready for.”

A tough test against Shenfield

Johnson is under no illusions about the challenge ahead.

“It will be a tough game — Shenfield are a strong, well-organised side.”

“They’ve got one or two real threats going forward, and we’ll need everyone performing at their best to get the result.”

“We’ve had two good games against them this season but come up just short both times. I’m confident we can put that right and get over the line this time.”

Bringing the fans into the occasion

Finally, Johnson highlighted the importance of the supporters — and what the team will give in return.

“The support we get at home is always fantastic, and the lads really feed off that energy.”

“We’re hoping for a loud atmosphere, and since the New Year I can’t think of many games where the team hasn’t worked their socks off.”

“The fans will get that same work rate and determination from us on Tuesday.”

With resilience, preparation, and belief at the heart of the dressing room, the Rams head into the EOFL Senior League Cup Final ready to give everything for the badge — and everyone who supports it.

COME ON YOU RAMS!
